What is Pieces? (Summary up to Part Twenty Five)

Pieces is, as the index says, the Story of Daniel Graves, an ex-agent of the Technocratic Union, returned to earth after a long series of off-world adventures, trying to put his life together. Emotionaly and socially crippled from the extensive brainwashing he received from his former employer, he is trying to find a place (or make) for himself in this world by reaching out to the family he abandoned unwillingly some years before his disappearance from this realm. This is complicated by the fact that his wife's family (and her new lover) are lycanthropes - a fact known previously to the technocracy, but not (at least not consciously) to him.

Character List

-Daniel initially contacts Lori Petersen, an old school friend of his wife, Anna's, to learn the whereabouts of his family. She has him talk to her brother, Matt Cash, a mage who had had dealings with Daniel before, when he still worked for the Technocracy. Cash convnces his sister that it is up to Anna, who winds up calling Daniel herself . She had thought her husband, and the father of their son, Danny, dead for the past six years.

-He speaks to Anna on a number of occasions, mostly on the phone as she is nervous about seeing him in person, and learns slowly about her new life, including her new boyfrend Grant Summer. He occassionally overreaches his powers so that he can see her, at least in his minds eye, though he has consciously decided not to use any of his own strong powers of mental control to influence her reactions to him.

-Meanwhile is contacted by Michael Xi, who used to be a member of he team that Daniel directed back before he was forced to abandon his family. Xi, now a regional administrator overseeing the Union's projects on the west coast, wants to bring him back into the fold.

-Daniel rents a basement apartment in a Portland, Oregon, suburb from Alita Haines o that he can be closer to Anna hand have a permanent place of his own to work from and try and hide from Xi's agents.

-Daniel uses the internet to contact another member of his Amalgam, a clone named Victor Brown, hoping that brown witll be sympathetic to his plight and might be of use in getting information from the Technocracy. Brown later offer both trust, friendship, and files on the Technocracy's projects and notes on Daniel, Anna, and their son. The latter is the only thing Daniel can accept at face value.

-Anna's boyfriend calls Daniel to let him know that while he isn't going to stop Anna from speaking with Daniel, he isn't going to lose her without a fight - especially not if he thinks Daniel has been trying to manipulate Anna's decisions. After this confrontation, Anna agrees to meet Daniel in person in the Japanese Botanical Gardens. She brings him an album with old pictures of herself and Danny, though he can't bring himself to look at them there. The awkward scene is interrupted by the arrival another mage who invites them to attend a performance ot the Tea Ceremony. Daniel declines.

-In a series of recurring dreams, Daniel starts to remember what happened the night that he dissappeared from Anna's life - the night that Danny was born. he'd never remembered seeing his son, although he had - getting in from a long trip away, he found his son in the hands of Anna's Garou relatives. Confused and angry, he called for back up, and remembered very little after that...

-In an attempt to reconnect with other factes of his past, Daniel visits a specialty shop and purchases a old copy of the pulp magazine, The Shadow, which he used to collect. He leaves this aside for a time, with the files he receives from Brown, until he works up the resolve to face what is insie. The files confirm what he remembers in his dreams, and also record that he had in fact known (or at least suspected) Anna's connection with the Garou from the time they first started dating, while he was still being recruited. The Technocracy had removed this memory from him, as they later removed all his memories of Anna and their life together.

-Daniel attends a martial arts expo with Alita, and encounters the same young mage, Ikkei Oyama, from the gardens. Oyama asks after Anna, and reveals that they are mutual friends of a man named Alan Tanaka, another werewolf who also volunteers at the gardens. Daniel confronts her about this, feeling that she dosn't trust him, and the scene ends poorly when he thinks he is losing her and reaches out, litterally to try and touch her. The backlash of the fabric of reality knocks him out, into another strange dream, and leaves him depressed and out of touch with his surroundings.
