Jukebox 2020!

Dear Jukebox Operator:

Thank you very much for writing something for me. I want to say first of all that if you have a strong idea about what you want to write, please feel free to run with it! I have tried to give some general ideas of things that I think might be cool for the stories, but for the most part I'm pretty open to interpretations. I'm okay with any rating, I don't have any real squicks or triggers. I like things that are scary and creepy and straight up horrific, but I also like things that a cute or funny or fluffy (though I'm not sure if any of the songs I picked really lean that way). I don't need happy endings, but I do enjoy them. If you have different ideas though, lemme have 'em! I like character introspection, I like world building, I like plot. I like porn, but I prefer plot to go with it. I don't know if any of these really lend themselves to porn, but if you think differently, lemme have it! Really, go wild! I'm pretty easy to please! Also, I am super into the idea of crossovers between any of the songs I'm requesting - I think some of them could go together pretty interestingly, so if there's an idea that strikes you along those lines please have at.

I am really excited for this fest, possibly more than is rational. I have a longstanding love of folk music and other forms of ballads and song-stories, and I like thinking about what we don't know as much as what we do. The canons we have to work with here are mostly pretty loose, and I'm excited to see where people go with them. I recognize that this is a lot closer to original fic than most fandom-fests, and I appreciate that it can be harder to make things up whole cloth, so really, thank you! Write what you want, what inspires you, and hopefully what is below has some good ideas if you're feeling lost!

It you are a podficer or a podfic team - I'm super excited, as I've never received a podfic for an exchange before! I think writing a story you know is destined for an aural medium is a cool challenge, and I know the recording of a podfic can be pretty challenging itself, so major props for offering! In this case, since the canon is also aural I think it is an especially interesting pairing! I am a big fan of podcasted/podficed short fiction, but I don't know if I can give any specific likes/dislikes /o\

If you are an artist - I actually really enjoy pieces that have more abstract or symbolic elements to them, so if you want to play with themes and atmosphere rather than create something strictly representational from any of the songs I have requested, please feel free! I don't know if that makes things easier or not, but I appreciate you putting your talents to use for me, in whatever medium!

I am requesting Fanfic, Fanart, or Podfic for all requests (but treats in any media would be a delight).

Born Never Asked - Laurie Anderson (Song)

It was a large room. Full of people. All kinds
And they had all arrived at the same building
At more or less the same time
And they were all free. And they were all
Asking themselves the same question:
What is behind that curtain?

You were born. And so you're free. So happy birthday

On Spotify

What *is* beyond the curtain?

Who are these people?

What are they free from?

What kind birth, or birthday is this?

The music is so deliberate, and cautious sounding, but with an uplift. It is very processional - its definitely a change of state. Are they souls being reborn, or passing on to an unknown state? People being uploaded into an AI consciousness? And what about the Never Asked - is it all a trick? Freedom is Slavery, all 1984 meets the Matrix? People being 'saved' by some kind of transformation whether they want it or not?

The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra - Anna von Hausswolff (Song)

My love is not enough
My love is not enough
To save me
To save me

On Spotify

What... what is happening here? Who is the singer? Who is searching for her? What does she need saving from? Is it... whoever is searching for her? Who *is* she? Is she the same person as the singer? Where did she go? Why?

This song so so extra and dramatic and heavy. I don't even need answers here, I would be satisfied to read a search, or part of it, that matches the energy of the song.

Song: Nightmare - Artie Shaw (Song)

(Instrumental)

On Spotify

Nightmares! But like... the haunting and a bit creepy kind? Maybe kind of noir? Old timey? With stalking? Bad weather? The kind you wake up in a cold sweat from, rather than a scream.

One of my Kind - Concrete Blonde (Song)

It's a matter of time before they find me
I'm waiting for a sign from one of my kind
I'm waiting for the time to fall behind me
I'm waiting for a sign from one of my kind

On Spotify

What is the singer's kind? I think this is meant to be a song about not fitting in and wanting to find people you belong with to make the world feel less mundane, which cool but like - how much less mundane are we talking here? Secret agents? Fae? Secret fae agents? How does it feel to be trapped in the world of shitty parties and bad dates when you know there is something more out there you can or should belong with? I admit I get Big 'Changeling: the Dreaming' Vibes from this song, but if that means nothing to you, then no worries!

Does the singer actually know what they are waiting for? What about whoever they're offering to date? And what happens to either of them if that sign ever comes? I think this might be good for an external PoV but I'm easy!

Mr. Grieves - TV on the Radio (Song)

What's that floating in the water?
Oh, Neptuna's only daughter
I believe in Mr. Grieves
Pray for a man in the middle
One that talks like Doolittle
I believe in Mr. Grieves
Do you have another opinion?

On Spotify

I tend to think of Mr Grieves as a kind of psychopomp figure, but I could easily see him as a more sinister type, if you prefer! Or even just a story told to frighten children or keep people in line, or someone who can be blamed for a string of tragedies?

I chose this version because I find it haunting and morose, and the a capella version gives off that nice sinister community vibe. Maybe things are not all as they seem? I doubt thy are, in fact, all right.

And what does Mr. Grieves think of how his name is being used?

Willie's Lady (Child 6) - Anaïs Michell & Jefferson Hamer (Song)

King Willie he sailed over the raging foam
He's wooed a wife and he's brought her home
He's brought her home all against his mother's will
His mother wrought her a wicked spell
And a wicked spell she's laid on her
She'd be with child for long and many's the year
But the child she would never bear

On Spotify

Moral of the story - men are useless? Let go of the apron strings if you wanna have a successful marriage? There's a lot of really cool magic in here, and also the very folk-ballad family elements of maternal control and such. I'm interested in Willy's Lady - where did she come from? How does she have all this cool Stuff? How does she come up with her clever plan? Is she unimpressed with her husband's attempts to get his mom to to "play nice"? Also his Mother - why is she so possessive? Why does she disdain the Cool Stuff? Where did she learn magic? Is there some reason their are in opposition? What happens after, when the son is born? Was there some reason to fear this child or prevent it from being born, rather than just sheer pettiness of an abandoned mother? Is... is it even Willy's child? Does Willy continue to play go-between? The magic contrasted with the Christian elements are interesting too - is there an element of old vs new here, or Christianization? Is the wife bringing a new faith to the land? Lots of things to play with :3
