Reveals!

I wrote way more for Yuletide than I expected to this year. I've been so busy, and one story, started late, seemed like plenty. But I still finished my main assignment (Murderbot) early and picked up an early pinch hit (Raksuras) from the mod list. And then I saw a couple of PHs go by for a book I hadn't read in years (City of Bones), tried for one, missed, and decided to write a treat anyway. And then I realized I'd written 3/4 nominated Martha Wells canons and decided I may as well go for broke, and write another full length treat, as well as a drabble for the last (Death of the Necromancer). The drabble was partly because I'd had a hard time deciding which of the two people who'd requested it (other than me) to write for, and *also* it felt weird not to write any yuletide drabbles. And since all my gifts were Murderbot, it made for a very Martha Wells-y yuletide! I'm not complaining, though, I love her stuff and there is a lot of good fic out there for it.

Brun - Garmarna (Song) (share also not on this one... hmmm, interesting! I now have Additional Suspicions...)

-This is a reaaaaaaally interesting take on this song, where not only does the maiden manage to get the better of Brun, the man who was going to murder her as he had several others, but their contest is part of a much longer epic. Her role, if not less passive, exactly, is more premeditated. It has a really great atmosphere, and as much as I love the others, I think this one hist the most of my buttons. I was positively *spoiled* this year, all told - and the collection is full of other excellent stories as well! YOu shoudl go check them out!

Space Swap Reveals Post

Today was author reveals for Space Swap! I wrote three things: two Voltron and one Clone Wars.

One of the Voltrons was my assignment. I was assigned to Longpig (my sister, who I live with). And she was assigned to Wererogue (My BiL, who I also live with). And he was assigned to me. Which made for some interesting times in the house! I figured it out right away, and she wound up telling him after he'd read the story, I think, but I didn't tell either of them until today :V But this meant I had to write a decoy story! It was really hard because they *both* needed me to figure out answers to some complicated canon questions! And I don't like working on multiple stories at once anyway. So, that was challenging. I'm not sure if it was better or worse that they were the same fandom... They didn't really have much crossover of characters, but they do share some headcanon :p The Clone Wars story was a pinch hit that I picked up! I got to write for Ventress, and I decided to tell the story of what happened to her light sabers after Bariss stole them in the final storyline of Season 5 :3

All in all a really excellent exchange experience :)

Dear Spacer,

Thanks, first of all, for writing! That is really the most important thing, and I will be delighted with whatever I wind up getting. I'm following my usual practice of cribbing heavily from other older letters, so hopefully it will retain some amount of coherency.

So first of all.... Generally speaking, I like stories that tell me a little bit more about the characters or the world they live in. I like stories with plot - with adventure, intrigue, and wacky hijinks. I also like stories that are more focused on character exploration – I don't need action if I have interesting introspection. I like both insider and outsider PoV stuff, and I feel like it is perfectly legit to write a story about a character that isn't from their perspective. I enjoy stories that are very emotionally intense, whether that means they are spilling over with ~feels~ or dark and unrelenting in tone – I enjoy horror, especially psychological horror, but also feel-good fluff.

I am definitely up for explicit stories for any of the requested "/" pairings! I don't have a list of specific squicks - I'm pretty open to stuff, and the delivery is really what's important. More than anything, when it comes (heh) to porn I want to be able to believe that the sex I'm reading is in character for whoever I'm reading about – not necessarily that it is something they want, but that the reactions I'm reading are true to whoever is having them, if that makes any sense. As for kinks, I like power dynamics, negotiation, all levels of consent (enthusiastic consent, ambiguous consent, dubcon, noncon), all kinds of sex (vaginal, anal, oral, intercrural, frottage, clothed, semiclothed, public, whatever!) knifeplay, breathplay, bdsm, blood, loyalty, kissing...a million other things I'm probably not thinking of. Basically, this is me.

As far as art goes, I should also note that I am interested in a variety of body shapes/sizes/colours, and I am also interested in symbolic representation and stylized art as well as more representational perspectives, as long as the requested characters are in some way identifiable in the piece.

I've never requested a vid before, so I am really curious as to what you might be able to do with these requests - I'm sorry if they aren't helpful, but anything that demonstrates or highlights or reveals aspects of characters or relationships would be cool! Totally down for crack here, also.

I just wanted to give some general likes/dislikes beyond what I put in the specific sections of my signup (which are repeated below).

I'm really interested in the dynamics of relationships - what people are bringing to the table, what do they want to get, what do they want to give, and what happens where the needs and desires of two individuals meet. Do they compliment or conflict? Do they build up or tear down? How do they resolve? I think there are lots of ways of getting at these questions as well, from throwing them into wacky hijinks to see how they execute (or not) a particular caper, to throwing them in bed and seeing what they want when they're there. So, I'm not necessarily looking for any kind of introspection in a story, I just want to know a little more about what makes these people work (or not) as a unit. I know there are some really talented artists out there, as well as writers, and I'm interested to see how these can be conveyed visually as well as textually.

Thanks, first of all, for writing! That is really the most important thing, and I will be delighted with whatever I wind up getting. I am scamming most of this from my last year’s letter (including this line!), so hopefully it will retain some amount of coherency.

So first of all.... Generally speaking, I like stories that tell me a little bit more about the characters or the world they live in. I like stories with plot - with adventure, intrigue, and wacky hijinks. I also like stories that are more focused on character exploration – I don't need action if I have interesting introspection. I like both insider and outsider PoV stuff, and I feel like it is perfectly legit to write a story about a character that isn't from their perspective. I like porn, but I do not require it. If you have a preference for or against in whatever you wind up writing, knock yourself out, I will appreciate it. If you include porn, I prefer it to be somehow relevant to the story – either it develops character relationships, or is vital to some zany caper or what have you. I’m not a big fan of pwp, though I think porn can certainly *be* the main action, so to speak, as long as it is showing me something new about characters or their relationship. I'm really hard to squick, so don't be afraid to show me your kinks! More than anything, when it comes (heh) to porn I want to be able to believe that the sex I'm reading is in character for whoever I'm reading about – not necessarily that it is something they want, but that the reactions I'm reading are true to whoever is having them, if that makes any sense.

Dear Jukebox Operator letter

Dear Jukebox Operator:

Thank you very much for writing something for me. I want to say first of all that if you have a strong idea about what you want to write, please feel free to run with it! I have tried to give some general ideas of things that I think might be cool for the stories, but for the most part I'm pretty open to interpretations. I'm okay with any rating, I don't have any real squicks or triggers. I like things that are scary and creepy, but I also like things that a cute or funny or fluffy (though I'm not sure if any of the songs I picked really lean that way). I don't need happy endings, but I do enjoy them. If you have different ideas though, lemme have 'em! I like character introspection, I like world building, I like plot. I like porn, but I prefer plot to go with it I don't know if any of these really lend themselves to porn, but if you think differently, lemme have it! Really, go wild! I'm pretty easy to please!

I am really excited for this fest, possibly more than is rational. I have a longstanding love of folk music and other forms of ballads and song-stories, and I like thinking about what we don't know as much as what we do. The canons we have to work with here are mostly pretty loose, and I'm excited to see where people go with them. I recognize that this is a lot closer to original fic than most fandom-fests, and I appreciate that it can be harder to make things up whole cloth, so really, thank you! Write what you want, what inspires you, and hopefully what is below has some good ideas if you're feeling lost!

If you are an artist - I actually really enjoy pieces that have more abstract or symbolic elements to them, so if you want to play with themes and atmosphere rather than create something strictly representational from any of the songs I have requested, please feel free! I don't know if that makes things easier or not - this is my first time requesting art, so I'm not sure what to say that is very helpful. I appreciate you putting your talents to use for me, in whatever medium!

Jukebox!

Jukebox is open - it has been for a while, and author reveals are tomorrow I think! This is really one of my favourite exchanges - reading through everything is like reading through a themed anthology, and there are so many really good fascinating stories to get through! I finally got my Invisible Light fic! And it is wonderfully creepy and I love it! It seems like it could be creepy in a very mundane way.... but maybe not. It made me think a little bit of like... Patricia Highsmith meets Neil Gaiman, maybe ^_^ I am super pleased with it!

On top of that, there were several songs that other people got stories for that either I had nominated or requested or both, so I feel like I kind of made out like a bandit just on those alone! And then there are just so many really cool stories based on things I barely knew at all before this... And there are playlists to listen to and a table of songs and lyrics and all sorts of other things that just make it a fantastic experience all around. A++ would recommend to anyone! I think I will try and pimp it harder next year, but we'll see :)

Jukebox Roundup!

I was really very pleased with this exchange overall, and am very much looking forward to doing it again when it runs (I think this spring?)! My main assignement ran long on me - i realized that this tends ot happen when I use OCs, but I think I kept it pretty well in check! I wound up getting assigned Scarborough Fair for Kaesa, who I know pretty well through Yulechat! I tried to think of a fun magial-realism place to take it, but it wound up in a modern setting, using a (completely made up) Materials Technology conference in Northern England, with a female materials scientist and a genderqueer artist as the lovers in question. There is banter and science (dodgy) and art (probably also dodgy) and four meal-based dates, one for each herb mentioned. I'm pretty pleased with it, overall, and she seemed to liek it a lot as well, so - score!

I also wrote.... a lot... of drabbles. One for Kaesa, for The Decemberists's The Infanta, as sort of a back-up mini fic, one for Nary, for Delta Rae's Bottom of the River because a: <3 and b: I love the song, and one for our mod Morbane (weho I also know pretty well from chat), for Covenant's Bullet because a: she did such a lovely job putting together this awesome exchange and b: Covenant! Someone requested something Industrial? Hells yes I will write that :D

I also write some for people I didn't know, mostly after listening to the playlist I putogether of songs with requests but no offers: for Corder's Close your House Down, and the Rumjack's Bar the Door Casey.

-<333 Ballads! I love this song so much, and my author did a wonderful job giving me... a lot more imnteresting questions, really! There is a possible backstory for the witch, and some very interesting backstory for the knight as well, and there is a lovely theme of uncertainty that runs through the whole thing. Even the knights future fate is an unknown... It balso ties in some other stories and ballads, some of which I recognize (Thomas the Rhymer, Tam Lin) and others I feel like I shoudl but can't *quite* place (the knight's princess >.>). Anyway, read it, it is lovely!

-A drabble for meeeee :D I love them in general and I'm happy to have gotten something for this song as well! yay treat! And I do think it is an interesting motivation for the act! So read it, it is pretty short after all ^-^ I have Suspicions about who it is by as well, but we shall see in a few days!

Dear Night Vale Author...

Weird at last! Thank you for offering something that I have requested - I hope I have given you some helpful ideas to work with, but please, write the story that interests you! In terms of general likes and so on, I am pretty easy to please. I don't have any serious squicks or triggers. I like things that are creepy, and dark, and funny, and fluffy. I like character driven stories and plotty fic, and introspection and worldbuilding. Not necessarily in combination! I like smut, but I like there to be something to go along with it - smut that is part of the plot, or gives some kind of insight into the characters. I don't need a happy ending, but I do welcome them. Write me something you are comfortable with, even if it isn't exactly what I've got in my optional details, and I will probably love it.

Night Vale often feels to me like something that could have been lifted directly out of my brain, so creepyness/weirdness in line with that the show dishes out is lovely. One of the things I love about Night Vale is that so much of the darkness is right out there in the open, rendered almost mundane by how relatively common it all becomes. Despite this, there are still secret and real conspiracies going on behind the scenes. People take so much for granted that they - at least most residents - have stopped questioning the weirdness. "Some mysteries aren’t questions to be answered, but just a kind of opaque fact, a thing which exists to be not known." I love that dynamic, and of course I am desperately curious to know more about the characters and scenarios I have requested. I'll repeat them here for convenience:
