Measured Words

So, after what I recognize is a *lengthy* gap of time, I am returning to this series! I plan to keep writing on it, but I can't promise regular updates. I going to try and alternate chapters with other projects.

Part of the reason I'm returning is renewed interest from having seen the new ST movie. And partly - I have submitted my dissertation recently! So, which I do have a list of academic things I want to accomplish, I can broaden my focus again in terms of fic-writing projects. So, hopefully my good-intentions will hold, and that whatever happens I can provide some measure of entertainment to those who read through meanwhile :)

( Twenty-Five Years 04 - Refugees )

This is a series I started writing to explore what happened to Nero, Ayel, and the Narada crew during the twenty-five years between the destruction of the USS Kelvin and the attack on the Klingon prison planet. Where were the crew? What happened to the ship? How did Nero manage to maintain both their loyalty and his simmering hate for Spock for so long? I thought I would set up this entry to keep track of things, as I post more chapters, expand the list of named crew members beyond two, to explain my sources, and so forth. If there is any other information people would like to see here, just let me know.

Alrighty then - new series! I'll see how long I can keep this up. I'm aiming for one a week, mostly because at the moment, that's probably about what I can manage. However this is liable to change, because unfortunately time is something I don't have in mass quantities.

So, then!

Working Title: Twenty Five Years (I'm open to suggestions - I'm terrible at naming things.)

Characters: Ayel, Nero, T'Lalea (not actually an OC but I did give her a name!), random Narada crew.

Summary: What happened to the crew of the Narada between the attack on the Kelvin and the attack on the Klingons previous to the capture of Spock Prime?

Rating: PG

AN: I am drawing on a number of sources for this - primarily the movie, of course. However, I'm scavenging from a host of other sources as well. I'm considering Countdown, the prequel comic, as cannon, to the extent of chosing some of its explanations over the movie. I'm also working on rumours and clips of things that were cut from the movie, and hoping that none of them turn out to completely contradict what I'm setting up here ;) I'm taking a few things from the novelization, and lifting some cultural background from Diane Duane's Rihannsu novels, with the caveat that cledarly some things have changed since the time of her books, and also that we're not dealing with Rihannu/Romulan nobility here, for the most part. I'm trying to balance things with what we know of ST:TNG/DS9/VOY Romulans.... for better or for worse. So, please forgive my creative license, though if you point out any major discrepancies, I can try and answer to the best of my knowledge why I did what, or fix things if you can demonstrate that I'm really just on crack. Nero, Disintegration

Nero regrets the words spit in anger as soon as they pass his lips. They’re not true. He would never surrender to Kirk, but to lose Romulus again? No.

The Narada is crumbling around him, his crew dying. Ayel is already lost. The frustration and pain tear at him as fiercely as the singularity, and his mind is filled with familiar visions of his home – his wife and family – being ripped apart.

At least, he thinks, he will join them soon. Screams ring out around him, and every detail of this end burns into him.

It seems to take forever.
