So, after what I recognize is a *lengthy* gap of time, I am returning to this series! I plan to keep writing on it, but I can't promise regular updates. I going to try and alternate chapters with other projects.

Part of the reason I'm returning is renewed interest from having seen the new ST movie. And partly - I have submitted my dissertation recently! So, which I do have a list of academic things I want to accomplish, I can broaden my focus again in terms of fic-writing projects. So, hopefully my good-intentions will hold, and that whatever happens I can provide some measure of entertainment to those who read through meanwhile :)

Notes: They keep getting longer @_@. this will probably cease to be true now that I'll have less dedicated writing time...

This chapter draws heavily on, and therefore is spoilery for some TOS episodes, namely the Balance of Terror, and (especially) The Enterprise Incident. In fact, I would say that though the telling of if is my own, the *story* presented here belongs primarily to DC Fontana. This draw also heavily on some of the story, not just the flavour, created by Diane Duane. While her work influences the series strongly in general, I think it is worth mentioning for this chapter specifically. Series Notes and chapter index here

Rating: Soft R for implied torture and violence.

Spock inclines his head, acknowledging Nero’s words.

“Delta Vega,” the Romulan repeats. “A ball of ice suitable to your black Vulcan heart. Close enough to keep an eye on you while I carry out my revenge.

“I’m keeping your ship, and your red matter. It’s only fitting that what was used to save Vulcan once, at the cost of my home, should now be used to destroy it.”

Nero’s eyes narrow.

“Don’t worry, Spock, I’ll make sure you can see. I want you to remember - I want you to live long, and suffer.”

Logically, this seems a likely outcome.

Nero, Disintegration

Nero regrets the words spit in anger as soon as they pass his lips. They’re not true. He would never surrender to Kirk, but to lose Romulus again? No.

The Narada is crumbling around him, his crew dying. Ayel is already lost. The frustration and pain tear at him as fiercely as the singularity, and his mind is filled with familiar visions of his home – his wife and family – being ripped apart.

At least, he thinks, he will join them soon. Screams ring out around him, and every detail of this end burns into him.

It seems to take forever.
