Heart of Darkness
Fear was the only expression her blank eyes seemed capable of. He could see it when he came near and gently took her hand to pull her to her feet. But she didn't resist.
"Rachel, please. I'm not…. No one is going to hurt you. I promise. It's over."
She shrank back from his soothing words, and the fear flashed again. Kolya's heart was heavier than stone. He couldn't blame her, but how could he help her after the torture she'd experienced? How could he help someone who'd come to fear love?
He tried a smile. She stared back blankly.
