How about another alphabet drabble challenge, then? Give me a fandom/character/pairing and a prompt for the letter of your choice and I'll write you a drabble! eg: L is for Love, Night Vale, Cecil/Carlos

Mal glowered at charges presented by the port authority – docking fee, a percentage for the stevedore's union (though they'd done their own unloading), exorbitant refueling charges...

"Buncha qiang bao hou-zi de pirates!"

Jayne snorted. "Told ya it ain't worth it."

Zoe pried the list out of Mal's clenched fist. "Sadly, he's right. By the time we pay all these fees, there's barely enough profit left to limp off to our next job, let alone do any real maintenance..."

"This!" Mal pointed at the list then shook his finger at the rest of the crew. "This is why we do crime!"

Steve grimaced, rolling into a sitting position. The situation seemed secure enough for the moment that he could spare the moment to recover. "I'm good."

"You don't sound so good. You know you shouldn't sneak up on me like that."

"I didn't want you to run off without saying hello again."

Steve shook his head, pulling himself gingerly to his feet. "Ouch. There's dirty fighting, and then there's dirty fighting. I guess you’ve been schooled in both."

She tossed her hair, her expression neutral. "Why do you think I wear stilettos?"

Tremaine was not satisfied with the explanation and shook the sphere again, listening to the chimes. "But how does the magic work, Uncle Ari?"

Arisilde smiled. "It's very simple. When you talk to it just right, sphere knows what you want to do. Then it talks to the ether and tells it how to do just that!"

Tremaine still looked dubious. "How do you talk to it right?"

"If you want to do a spell, you have to talk to it with your own magic. But you should talk to it anyway, or it might get very lonely and sad."

It had started with a more mundane routine – a cup of tea and some quiet conversation in front of the fire. They were neither of them chatty by nature, but sometimes their evening talks stretched.

"It helps me sleep, to listen to someone as I fall asleep," Lisa eventually admitted. "I do miss Rupert for that."

Their chats had migrated then to Lisa's bedroom, and they'd begun to explore other rituals to help one another relax. Now they sealed their evenings with a kiss, Hilary's fingers deep inside Lisa, drawing out the perfect release from the stress of the day.

"Wise maiden," he replied, "Poseidon, lord of the sea and waves, has ordered me to unleash them and hound the fleets of those who have spurned his protections. I cannot obey both commands – and my island lies at his mercy."

"Surely we can come to some accord."

He saw her hand tighten on her Aegis.

"Send your fleet to Egina, merciful lady, and they should be spared the worst."

"A prince should be noble and caring," Utena countered cautiously.

"Of course." He smiled over her shoulder at a trio of passing girls. Utena could hear them dissolve into gossip and giggles. "Can a prince have more than one princess though? Would it be noble to pass by someone else in need of saving because he has already done it once?"

"A prince should help whoever needs it, but his princess is special."

"How would a girl know, then, if she'd met her prince?"

Utena huffed. "She would know."

The neon lights on the diner's sign flickered softly. Its design was based on old pictures and architectural drawings of one of their mark's high school hangouts, intended to make him feel young and comfortable. It wasn't exactly the same, but it had just the right number of specific details. The flickering lights were one of the ones Ariadne was most proud of.

She and Arthur pulled up in the DeSoto Firedom, and he shot her a curious look.

"You ready?"

"Ready as I'll ever be to see Eames in a poodle skirt." She smirked, but took the offered arm.

Raquel almost laughed, but caught herself in time. Weihan was serious – not being playful, not putting on an act. And he still had the gun trained on her.

"You don't know me?"

He glared, concentrating. "I know you. I don't know who you are."

"It's Raquel... Weihan, what happened to you?"

He swore in frustration, aiming less certainly. And then he laughed madly. "I was shot in the head. Someone tried to kill me."

Still he didn't seem to know her – it broke her heart. "Are you so sure they didn't?"

"No." he lowered the gun, hands shaking. "I'm not."

E is for Electric

"The computer's over here," Amy said, but Simon was already sliding into the dusty chair.

The screen came to life when he wiggled the mouse. "Excellent. I can get what we need from here."

Amy hesitated. "Simon... That's not even plugged in."

"Oh." He gave up the pretense of typing, letting the text stream by in a blur, faster than she could read – faster that the processor should have been able to handle.

"You can't even tell anymore, can you?"

He didn't look up. "It's just another way things are connected."

"And you can control it."

"Yes."

Amy frowned, concerned.

S is for Sleepless

Aleyn wasn't in his own room, nor was he in Vedran's or Ardith's. He hadn't fallen asleep in any of the kids' room, which left his lab.

It took him a few minutes to answer their knocking, and he emerged looking wide eyed and alert.

"It's after midnight," Ardith said.

"I know – I was testing something, and it's got me too wired to sleep."

She nodded. "We'd been hoping you would come to bed."

"With both of you?"

Vedran smiled, taking his hand. "You're the one who's always saying that there are better ways to spend sleepless nights than working."

T is for Tired

"I should have remembered this earlier," Sanadhìl said, passing a ring to Dozilva.

She eyed it dubiously. "Your Ring of Sustenance? It isn't just me that needs rest – it's the baby."

"I'm not suggesting that that you try and rest less... Just that it could be more efficient."

Areka leaned in the doorway, hand resting on her own smaller bump. "I don't think it would hurt."

Dozilva closed her fingers around the ring and smiled at Sanadhìl, resolving to consult a cleric. "Of course you would turn to magic, my love."

He nodded curtly. "I was just trying to help."

Q - Quiet time, Hannibal, Winston

Q is for Quiet Time

When Will wasn't home, Winston could play some with the other dogs and there was kibble and water and some bones to chew. Mostly it was waiting-for-Will time.

When Will first got home everyone would run around outside. Sometimes they would go for walks, and that was the very best time – running around and sniffing everything, sometimes chasing rabbits and seeing Will happy.

The very very best time was later at home when it was quiet and Winston could lie on the floor at Will's feet, and Will would scratch his ears and tell him he was a good dog.

Good Man

The mourners huddled together in the pews as the last few bars of the deceased's favourite song streamed through the speakers. The man at the podium wiped his eyes and cleared his throat.

"He'll be missed by everyone. There's so much I could say.... He was a good man."

A door burst open. The funeral director ran a hand through her hair, muttering 'not again' as another man barged up to the front of the service.

"That's a really nice eulogy, and I'mma let you finish. But Matt W---- was a damned fine man!" He dropped the mic, and disappeared.

The merchant shrunk back from the mean-eyed man in front of him, thinking that he should have taken his sister's advice and stayed home.

"I don't know," he insisted.

"Lies!" The pirate, the infamous Captain Low, slammed a fist on the table. "Do you know what it is to be keelhauled?"

He nodded slowly.

"You think, maybe you'll drown, eh? Well you won't. You'll be ripped to shreds by barnacles, and if you live and don't answer me then, by god I'll do it again!" Low grinned sadistically. "So you'd best tell me now, you sniveling puppy – where's the gold?"

"You have to understand, I was basically still a kid. I didn't see myself that way, but I was. You've heard the story before: a boy with no father, no role model, nothing but unanswered questions, feeling really held back by life. And there was suddenly this great mystery for me to be part of! Something to answer those questions, help me connect to my father, and maybe even find out more about what had happened to him. I had to take those chances, take whatever help I could get.
