Today's exercise for
august_writing was as follows:
"The Liar, Control Freak & the Narcissist"
Three characters sit down together.
Show (don't tell!) by the things they say to one another that one is a control freak, one a liar, and one a narcissist.
So I figured the Pieces crew fit that well enough, and they've been on my mind, so here you are!
“I didn’t come to this meeting to listen to you tell me what to do, Xi.” Daniel frowned. Xi smiled thinly. Victor was listening closely to the conversation, he could tell, even as he watched his own reflection in the diner’s dark window.
“No, of course not, Graves. You’re very single minded. I’m only relaying this information to you because I think it is important that you understand the full situation here. You of all people should understand the interconnectedness.”
“No such thing as coincidence, and all that,” Victor added dryly. Daniel couldn’t tell if he was buying Xi’s line or not.
“You’re going to have to do better than feeding me pieces of carefully selected information, Xi, if you’re hoping to convince me of anything.”
“Be reasonable, Graves. Even if you were an active agent I could hardly authorize release of *all* my files.”
“You’re the Regional Director. Who would stop you?”
“There’s always someone higher up the chain, Graves, as you should well know.”
“Of course. I’m sure you ruin the details of all of your operations past your superiors.”
“Company coming,” Victor interjected as he turned to flash a confident grin at the waitress. She blushed, somehow only remembering to refill Victor’s coffee before wandering away distractedly. “Just can’t see past my manly charms, I suppose. Or maybe it is just that I’m the only one at the table who knows how to smile?”
Daniel and Xi frowned in unison.
"This is how it is going to work, Xi. If you want me to cooperate with you in any manner, you will give me access to all your files. There’s no compromise here. I don’t trust you.”
“You keep saying that, but I’m acting only in your best interest. You should keep in mind that other Agents wouldn’t be nearly so lenient.”
“I’ve said all there is to be said.”
Xi watched his old Amalgam leader walk off, and turned to Victor.
“Well, that could have gone better, Vic.”
“And I told you – he’s not going to walk into such a transparent trap so easily. You’re deluding yourself more than anyone else.”
“We’ll see how it turns out in the end.”
“You can. I’m going to indulge in an adrenalin rush and see how fast I can make it back to Seattle.”
“You still need a haircut, Vic.”
“Yeah,” he grinned again – it was an old debate. “Not likely Mike, not likely.”
