his is for [livejournal.com profile] curtana. I like to think it answers an important historical question - Why did Bathrolomew Roberts, who became the most successful pirate of his age, turn to piracy in the first place? Roberts was elected captain after the death of Howel Davis at the Isle of Princes, and according to the articles from his ship, never approved of much of the revelry associated with piracy. Enjoy ^-^

Master and Apprentice

"Roberts is it?"

He appraised the captain. Bart had never met someone quite like him – Clever, well dressed, handsome enough for a sailor. And loved, even well loved, by not just the pirate rabble he found himself amongst, but the captains of the ships he plundered, by their sailors… by Bart himself.

"Aye."

"The men seem to like you well enough, but they say you won't drink with 'em."

"It's Sunday, captain. God's day."

"God's day?" Davis laughed, and smiled genially. "Aye, and I'm God on this ship. I say you'll have a drink with me."

How could he refuse?
